An Evening with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi: How to Be an Antiracist 


Join us for an evening with Dr. Ibram X. Kendi, author of How to Be an Antiracist, Stamped from the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America and other books. Professor Kendi is one of America’s foremost historians and antiracist scholars. In 2020, he was named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world and by The Root 100 as the most influential college professor.


At UWM, Professor Kendi will participate in a conversation on antiracism with UWM’s Chief Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Officer, Dr. Chia Youyee Vang. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to see the award-winning author, scholar and Founding Director of the Boston University Center for Antiracist Research, Dr. Ibram X. Kendi.

A sign language interpreter will be provided. Books will be sold at the event by Boswell Book Company.

Sponsored by Student Involvement, UWM Division of Student Affairs, UWM Global Engagement and Inclusion, and Leaders Igniting Transformation.

Doors will open at 6:30 PM and the event will start at 7:00 PM followed by a Q&A from the audience.

You MUST be in your seat by 7:00pm or your seat will be forfeit. Any seats unclaimed at the event start time will be offered on a first-come first-served basis.

Bag Restrictions

Special event bag size restrictions are in effect for this event. Bags larger than 8" x 10" will not be permitted in the room for the event. By reserving/purchasing a ticket to this event, the attendee agrees to allow their bag to be searched by security personnel.


Audience Behavior Guidelines


The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee embraces the principles of free speech and the resulting free exchange of ideas. To assure that the speaker can be heard, the audience can hear and see, and that the event is safe, the following guidelines have been set by the UWM Administration in accordance with the Wisconsin Administrative Code:

1. AUDIENCE MEMBERS MUST REMAIN SEATED
All aisles, exits and passageways must be kept clear.

2. NO STICKS OR STANDARDS
No signs supported by sticks or standards shall be permitted in any assembly in a University building.

3. NO VISUAL OBSTRUCTIONS
No activities or signs that obstruct the view of the audience shall be permitted.

4. VERBAL/SOUND DEMONSTRATION LIMITATIONS
Noise levels that impede the program’s progress or the audience’s ability to hear shall not be permitted.

5. OBJECTS MAY NOT BE THROWN
The throwing of any objects will not be tolerated.

6. FORCE OR VIOLENCE NOTIFICATION
Behavior that infringes on the safety of others or endangers University property shall not be permitted.

Do I need to wear a mask?

Yes! Currently, all persons entering a building on campus must wear a mask.

Do I still need to wear a mask if I am fully vaccinated or have already had COVID-19?

Yes!

Can I bring food or beverages?

Food and beverage will not be permitted into the event space.

How do I reserve a ticket?

Tickets can be reserved online through the UWM Ticket Office website. Tickets will be available for UWM Main Campus students. 

Will tickets be available to staff, faculty, alumni and the greater UWM community?

Tickets will be made available first to UWM Main Campus students starting on August 16. Depending on how many tickets are reserved, we may decide to open up tickets to the greater UWM community the week of September 7.
